An emergency services response turned into a bundle of joy at Warriewood today.

Just after 10.15am this morning (Friday, 13 May) a Triple Zero (000) call was received from a townhouse complex at Macpherson Street, Warriewood, where a concerned resident had called emergency services following cries of distress being heard from a neighbouring home.

Firefighters from Mona Vale Station were the first responders on scene, joined shortly after by firefighters from Narrabeen and NSW Police officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command.

They found themselves unable to enter the home and were about to force entry to the townhouse when a five-year-old girl at the home used a stepladder to activate the automatic garage door to allow them inside.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Leading Station Officer Tracey Spindler led the team into the home and discovered a mother in need of assistance nursing a newborn baby in the shower. The baby girl arrived two weeks early, catching her father off-guard at work.

Female firefighters comforted the woman until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived to assess the pair before taking mother and baby to Northern Beaches Hospital in a stable condition.

Firefighters commended the actions of the baby girl’s five-year-old sister, who was presented with a firefighter’s red helmet and a ‘Care Bear’ for her quick-thinking efforts.

The new mother praised FRNSW firefighters for their assistance.

“They were fantastic with everything, they were so helpful and I really appreciate what they did for me. I’m still in shock, it was a bit crazy this morning but now all is good,” said the new mother.

While firefighters are trained to prepare for anything, some things remain unexpected.

“I’ve been faced with some interesting scenarios in my 24 years as a firefighter, but this tops the lot and is the most special, without a doubt. Even when you’re thinking about being ‘Prepared for Anything’, you certainly aren’t expecting this,” said SO Spindler.
