WORK to update safety measures on a coastal road has been completed ahead of schedule.

A new safety gate and advanced signage is now in place on the B3191 at Cleeve Hill, near Watchet.

The installation is based on based on flood gates on the Somerset Levels, and will prevent access either side of the narrowest section of the road in the event of an alarm being triggered which warns of possible movement of the cliff.

The road forms part of the coastal footpath and there will also be a signed diversion route for footpath users incorporated into the scheme.

Work commenced on Monday (September 5) and was completed by Friday.

During the works the road was closed for nine hours a day.
