Even during the apocalypse, dogs deserve love. Here’s how to pet Buckley and unlock the 'Who's a Good Boy?' Trophy in The Last of Us Part 1.

After the release of the sequel in 2020, The Last of Us Part 1 has taken on many of the changes that were introduced. Most notably are the inclusions of the award-winning accessibility features and the removal of difficulty based trophies. By doing each of these things, Naughty Dog has created a gaming experience with all types of players in mind.

During the second half of their journey, Joel and Ellie’s trek across the United States will bring them to Wyoming. Here, players can make progress with a number of trophies, but there is one unique achievement that can only be found here, which involves a sweet moment with a canine friend.

Players will reach the hydroelectric dam during the seventh chapter of The Last of Us Part 1. In this section, Joel is reunited with his brother and is able to explore the peaceful settlement that Tommy and Maria have built together. Before entering the dam proper, there are collectibles and a new weapon that players will want to pick up before progressing as this area becomes inaccessible once Joel and Ellie are invited in.

Although unrelated to this trophy, players can pet another animal after entering the dam. Ellie will begin petting a horse, which prompts an optional conversation with her, and players will also be able to interact with the horse. There may not be a formal reward, but it does hammer home the sense of community and safety that has been built here in Jackson.

As for the good boy in question, Buckley, who is named after Troy Baker’s late dog, can be found further in the dam. Tommy will lead Joel to the control room for the turbine test and players can collect resources along the way. After passing the metal gate, players will find the vigilant Buckley stationed outside the control room and there will be a prompt to indicate that players can pet him.

This will be the only chance that players will have to interact with Buckley, as shortly afterwards, players will be defending the dam from attack. But, they can rest assured, Buckley is unharmed during this sequence and even makes another appearance at the beginning of The Last of Us Part 2.

Even if Tommy says he’s not a good guard dog, Buckley’s company is greatly appreciated by those in Jackson and the players alike. After giving Buckley some well deserved attention, players will be awarded with the “Who’s a Good Boy?” trophy.

The Last of Us Part 1 is available on PlayStation 5 and a PC version is in development.
