A video showing a blind and deaf dog's delighted reaction to realizing their owner is home has been melting hearts among animal lovers.

Footage of Jasper's overjoyed response was shared to TikTok by his owner posting under the handle blackwings_wolf. It's been viewed over 700,000 times and can be watched here.

Came home from work and Jasper was still asleep so I decided to test to see how his senses were. The answer is not great. Please excuse the state of the floor - laminate is expensive and isn't the top of our priority list 😂. I also need to fix the kitchen draw that's hanging off 😭. #fypシ #fy #fyp #dogsoftiktok #blinddog #blinddogsoftiktok #dogs #olddogsoftiktok

While owning a disabled dog is not without its challenges, canines who are unable to see or hear can still live a happy and active life. The key thing is preparation. According to Hannah Doyle, the editor RSPCA Animal Life magazine, it's crucial pet owners think about the needs of the disabled pet in the home.

"Don't move the furniture around," she writes. "Your dog will quickly make a mind and scent map and be able to get around—unless you change things."

Doyle adds: "Get down on all fours and crawl around looking for hazards, like sharp edges. It's a bit like baby-proofing your home (in fact, baby gates at the top of stairs are a great idea)."

Once settled, however, a blind or deaf dog can live comfortably alongside their human companions. Jasper is living proof of this. As the video explains, he is "blind and going deaf" but has lost none of his inquisitive nature.

In the clip, it's apparent that, having just woken up from a nap, he has yet to realize his owner is home. As the footage shows, it takes him a few moments to find his bearings around the house.

However, he's soon alerted to the presence of something new thanks to his keen sense of smell. In the video he can be seen sniffing around the room with his owner noting "he knows something is different, but isn't sure what."

After coming across a pile of wash in an unexpected place, Jasper's curiosity gives way to visible delight, with the dog seen wagging his tail, evidently realizing his favorite person is home.

Excitedly unsure where to turn next, his owner begins whistling in an attempt to get his attention, but Jasper's failing ears do not appear to pick up the sound. Instead his owner decides to approach him, with the pair sharing a warm embrace.

A glimpse of the disabled canine's happy life, the clip had viewers on social media feeling understandably emotional. Glassslipperzzz was welling up at the moment "the tail starts wagging" with armin.ator commenting: "he's adorable. Please take good care of this angel." Pat Birch asked Jasper's owner to "give him lots of cuddles for me please" while tezeu21 said: "We don't deserve dogs."

Others shared their own experiences caring for blind or deaf dogs. Sassbun wrote: "My dog went blind at the beginning of the summer, he's also quite deaf. Over time he'll be relying on his nose more and will get better with identifying." Benthompson5874 added: "Our old girl was deaf and blind. She still made it around the house and outside. Just make allowances and extra time."

Responding to the comments, Jasper's owner confirmed he's been steadily going blind since the age of 3 but lost his hearing recently and over a much shorter period of time. Despite this, they insisted he is "adapting" well to these changes. "He's not in pain and is a happy doggo," they added. "He loves walks and beach trips."
